History of Allsail

Allsail was started in 1988 by Mike De Berg as a sail training club to satisfy the sailing needs of adult sailors and would be sailors who didn't have a boat, have had a boat and could never get crew - or were just looking fo a social environment of like minded people who had a passion for the sea.

The trusty fleet of J24s and a variety of offshore yachts from 35 to 44 ft formed a motley fleet that provided much enjoyment and challenges to sailors - whether just cruising around Pittwater - or in the open ocean on the way to Hamiltion Island, New Caledonia, Hobart or many other destinationsI

In 1996 Mike started the annual overseas flotilla holidays mainly in the Mediterranean with the current principal Russell Waddy first joining him as a trainee skipper in 2001 in Greece. This was also Cherie's first overseas sailing adventure

After some 14 years in 2003 Mike passed the baton to Graham Friend  - a passionate sailor who introduced the exciting Radford 50 Seaquest - The Weapon to Allsail. This fast but sometimes daunting yacht had many successes including winning the Rolex Trophy in 2005 followed by a 7th in PHS for the Hobart race of the same year. Graham also took Allsailers to the Carribean for the first time - and during this period Russell was along for the ride when his corporate career allowed.

When Graham moved on in 2008 Russell and Cherie took the reigns - and with the backroom support of sailing enthusiast John Gibbons, set about taking Allsail to the next level.

Today it boasts one of the most modern training, club, charter and yachtshare fleets in the country and continues the tradition of annual overseas yachting adventures to exotic locations each year.

Allsail is an Australian Sailing affiliated club and an AS Discover Sailing training centre.

Allsail is also an International Yacht Training Worldwide partner school.

But it is the many instructors, voulunteer skippers and the many thousands of people over the years who have learnt to sail with Allsail on Pittwater and beyond, then joined the club and gone on to keep building their sailing skills, experience and long term sailing friendships  - which are the heart of the Allsail legacy which continues to go from strength to strength.
